I still remember the day I was introduced to what is known as the magic formula investing system. I was watching Bloomberg TV in my brothers room and was channel surfing before they introduced Joel Greenblatt for an upcoming segment. I didn’t know who he was back then but I remember the words value investing being mentioned in the same sentence, so I decided to stick around to see what he had to say on value investing. At the time, I was still relatively new to investing and had decided to explore value investing as that’s what Warren Buffett practiced. After all, wouldn’t it make sense to follow in the footsteps of a man who has made his fortune allocating money? Back to the Bloomberg interview. I don’t exactly remember the interview, but I do remember Joel Greenblatt being very confident in the book and repeating how people will not follow the system due to its simplicity. I soon ordered the book and to keep it short, it struck a chord and I have followed the magic formula investing system almost religiously.
